Supplementary Subject in Classical Music

The course consists of History of Music, Aural Training/Improvisation, Harmony and Basic Music Technology B, all of which must be completed in order to pass the subject.

History of Music: Lessons will be held during autumn. Instruction will centre around one topic from music history.
Aural Training/Improvisation:
The course aims to mirror music's various means of expression and ability to cross borders of time and genre through performances. Improvisation is essential.

Harmony:
The course covers composition and arrangements in several musical genres. The student products are performed under teacher tuition.

Compulsory course in Basic Music Technology B:
The course provides a short introduction to basic sound theory, hard disc recording/ sampling/ sound editing, microphone choice, studio work, and sound aesthetics for the performing artist.

The student:
-Has deeper knowledge of a defined theme from the history of the western classical music.
-Has knowledge of important theories, problems and scientifically methods in the chosen theme from the history of music, in addition to knowledge about the esthetical perspectives of music, and the cultural and social context of music.
-Can articulate this knowledge in writing and speech, and apply the knowledge when playing.
-Has basic skills in arranging and composing music for small ensembles in different styles and expressions.
-Can learn and communicate sonorous and/or written music based on aural training and musical imagination.
-Has basic knowledge of music technology.

History of Music:
Lectures: 2 lessons a week for 13 weeks (autumn). One assesment (5-7 pages). The assesment must be passed before the student can have the final examination. The subject ends with a written examination (4 hours).

Aural Training/Improvisation:
1.5 hours of group instruction a week for 27 weeks. Assessment: Compulsory assignments.

Harmony:
Lectures - 1 lesson a week for 14 weeks (spring). Groups - 1 lesson a week for 14 weeks. Compulsory instruction. Assessment: compulsory assignments.

Compulsory course in Basic Music Technology B: Instruction: 2 lessons a week for 8 weeks, in practice groups. Assessment: Pass/fail based on written practice assignments and participation in compulsory instruction.
