Musical understanding B

The course consists of three modules; History of Music B, Harmony B and Basic Music Technology B. All course modules should have a coordinated focus on musical tendencies from 1900 to 2000, with emphasis on stylistic understanding/analysis and the creation of music, and should be relevant for the students work with the main instrument. Within the perspective of music history, the social aspects and cultural context of music is emphasized. The students will be trained in evaluating the factors that influences the creation of music, musical expression and the contemporary function of music.

In harmony B the students will be taught basic techniques that reflect the music-history focus, including basic instrumentation and notation. The student will compose their own music under supervision.

Course in Basic Music Technology B is an introduction to basic knowledge of sound, recording, editing and aesthetical issues from a performative perspective.

Knowledge:

The candidate:

• has basic knowledge about important trends in western classical music after the year 1900
• has knowledge about and can reflect on the various parameters of expression in music over time and genre
• can reflect on the role music has in society
• has knowledge about the factors that influences the creation of music, musical expression and musical functionality, including how the contemporary music is related to previous musical expressions.
• has basic and practical knowledge on some typical techniques of composition and notation of western classical music after 1900

Skills:

The candidate:

• masters basic musical composing tools on a level that enables her/him to write own musical compositions with references to a sample of musical styles of expression from after 1900.
• has basic skills in music technology and can use digital tools for recording, editing music and notation.
• masters a rich musical vocabulary, and can articulate musical knowledge both written and verbally.
• can provide information from different sources and use the library appropriately.

History of Music: Lectures: 2 lessons a week for 12 weeks (autumn). Lectures and seminars. Activities: active listening, analysis, score reading, discussions and student presentations. Mandatory writing assignment or equivalent that must be approved. Assignment is delivered in Blackboard.

Harmony B: Lectures - 1 lesson a week for 12 weeks (spring). Groups: 1 hour per week.

Course in Basic Music Technology B (autumn) is an introduction to basic knowledge of sound, recording, editing and aesthetical issues from a performative perspective.
