Historical Perspectives on Music 1

Through studies of relevant literature and examples, the course provides an introduction to central characteristics regarding the musical development in Western culture. Within the historical perspective, emphasis is placed on the music's position in a social and cultural context. In addition to the reading list, a compulsory syllabus of musical work, excerpts and examples are included.

Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1011
- has knowledge about the most important developments in Western music from the Middle Ages until ca. 1800
- has knowledge of the course’s distinctiveness and relevance
- has knowledge of selected musical examples from the period
- has knowledge of relevant sources, notational techniques and methods for music analysis
- has knowledge of the music’s aesthetical perspectives and its cultural and socio-political contexts
- has knowledge about the problems associated with writing about music and music and historiography
- has knowledge about practical performance problems connected to the reconstruction and interpretation of music from ca. 800 to ca. 1800

Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1011
- can express his/her professional knowledge convincingly in both writing and speech
- can familiarise him- or herself with and assess scholarly texts about different subjects and is able to make his/her own reflections based on acquired knowledge
- can analyse music from these epochs and is able to describe its characteristic aesthetic and structural features.
- can use his/her knowledge in music history creatively during own musical performance
- can read, transcribe and perform music from selected original sources
- can reflect about his/her own professional behaviour and is able to adjust it under guided supervision
- can update his/her knowledge within the field of study

Lectures and compulsory attendance to seminars. Minimum two written assignments must be delivered during the semester. Half the instruction in this course is in Norwegian and half is in English.
