Historical Perspectives on Music 2

Through studies of relevant literature and examples, the course provides an introduction to central characteristics regarding the musical development in Western culture. Within the historical perspective, emphasis is placed on the music's position in a social and cultural context. In addition to the reading list, a compulsory syllabus of musical work, excerpts and examples are included.

Knowledge:
Examinees with completed qualifications in MUSV1012
- know the main features of the development of Western art music from ca. 1800 and till the present day
- have obtained knowledge of the topic's main characteristics and actual relevance
- know a selection of compositions from the particular period
- have obtained knowledge of relevant musical and literary sources, means of notation and methods for analysing music.
- are familiar with aesthetical perspectives of the music involved, as well as the music's cultural and socio-political contexts.
- are aware of challenges pertaining to musical writing and musical historiography

Skills:
Examinees with completed qualifications in MUSV1012
- can express their professional knowledge satisfactorily through both writing and speech
- are able to scrutinize and evaluate scholarly texts concerning different subjects and base their independent reflections on the acquired knowledge
- can analyse music from the actual period, define the characteristic aesthetic traits and describe the music’s compositional structure
- can use their knowledge of music history creatively in their own musical performance
- can reflect upon their own scholarly activities and adjust and rethink under guidance and tutorship
- can update and renew their knowledge within the field of the over-all topic

Half the instruction in this course is in Norwegian and half is in English.
