History of Music A

The main objective of the course is to provide an introduction to the music history of western culture, from the Middle Ages until today. At the final exams the students will be given questions from parts of the syllabus.

Skills:
The candidate:
-Can analyse music and find characteristic esthetical characters and the form the music is built upon.
-Can relate this historical knowlegde to her/his musical performances.

Knowledge:
The candiate
-Has knowledge of the historical main lines of western classical music.
-Has knowledge of a selection of compositions.
-Has basic knowledge of relevant sources, ways of notation and methods on musicalHas knowledge of muscal estethical perspectives, and the cultural and social context of music.
- Has knowledge of musical esthetical perspectives, and the cultural and social context of music.

Lectures - 2 hours per week for 12 weeks in fall and 14 weeks in spring. Participation in Norwegian traditional Music course at the Ole Bull Academy replaces 1 week of instruction in the fall term.


Three compulsory assignments: One in the middle of 1. seesmter, one in the end of 1. semester and one in the middle of 2. semester.Scope: 5-7 typed A4 pages with 1.5 spacing, type size 12, and standard margins. Example notes and illustrations are in addition to this.
