Musical understanding A

Through studies of relevant literature and played examples, the students are given an introduction to central aspects in the development of western music from medieval music till around 1900. Within the historical perspective, the importance of music in a social and cultural context is emphasized, and the music will in relevant cases be related to the students repertoire. The subject gives a basic introduction to the terms of music, notation and analysis. A course in Norwegian traditional music at Ole Bull academy is part of the subject.

Knowledge:
The candidate:
-Has knowledge of the historical main lines of western classical music from medieval music till 1900
-has knowledge about, can recognize and compare aesthetical and stylistical character, compositions, forms and ensemble types for this timeframe.
-has knowledge about different ways of notation and methods on musical analysis
-Can relate this historical knowlegde to her/his musical performances.
-has knowledge about and can reflect upon the social context of music
-has knowledge about norwegian traditional music and dance

Skills:
The candidate:
-can find different sources of information, and use the Library
-masters a good musical system of concepts
-can relate this historical knowlegde to her/his musical performances.
-can articulate her/his knowledge both written and verbally.

2 lessons per week for 12 week in fall and 12 weeks in spring.

The lessons includes lectures, active listening, analysis, score-reading, discussions and student-presentations.

Two written assignments and two presentations connected to selected parts of the subjects will be given. One of the assignments will be related to the students main instrument.

Scope for the written assignments: minimum 3 typed A4 pages with 1.5 spacing, type size 12, and standard margins.

Presentations are given in a group.

The written assignments can after a revision be part of the portfolio.
