About this course

Content

Introduction to Materials technology and the Norwegian metal and materials industries, resources and challenges; typical job markets for Material experts; global issues. Then, atomic structure; bindings; crystal defects; effects from defects; important mechanical properties and how to determine (methods) these properties; connections between microstructure and properties; microstructural control in processing; alloy design, solidification and microstructure; materials selection.

Learning outcomes

The course gives a broad overview of Materials technology and the related challenges and opportunities. The industry aspects of Norway are emphasized and discussed in regard to global issues. After the final exam, the student should basics in regard to how materials are produced, how we determine their properties and how we can influence and govern important properties. The microstructure is a key element and one should be able to determine basic microstructure by means of metallography. A follow-up course is the TMT 4175 Materials technology 2.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, excursions, laboratory exercises, group work. All exercises and laboratory training are compulsory. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
