About this course

Content

An introduction to materials science and materials. Atomic structure, chemical properties, chemical bonding and bonding forces. - The coupling between chemical bonding and material groups. - Structure of solids. - Defects and diffusion in solids. - Mechanical properties of metals. - Dislocations and strengthening mechanisms. - Binary phase diagrams.

Learning outcomes

The student should: - Understand how material properties depend on chemical composition atomic- and crystal structure. - Perform crystallographic calculations, and describe the structure of metals, ceramics and polymrers. - Understand how defects and diffusion in materials affect mechanical properties, and perform basic diffusion calculations. - Describe how strengthening mechanisms, mechanical- and thermal treatments affect the structure and mechanical properties of metals. - Use binary phase diagrams to find relevant information about phases and microstructure in alloys. - Carry out laboratory work and document the work in written reports.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and laboratory work (total of 200 hours). Estimated time spent: Lectures: 56 hours, Exercises: 40 hours, Laboratory work: 40 hours, independent study: 64 hours. One compulsory excursion in Norway is planned if feasible due to communicable diseases.
