About this course

Content

The course is a laboratory course that consists of two parts: General Chemistry (Part 1) and Organic Chemistry (Part 2). The parts are taught in parallel throughout the semester, and the parts are approximately equal in workload.

The laboratory tasks in the general chemistry section deal with topics taught in the course TMT4115 General Chemistry. The laboratory tasks include classical qualitative analysis and classical quantitative analysis. An assignment in preparative inorganic chemistry is given. Students will also receive an introduction to literature search.

The laboratory tasks in the organic chemistry deal with topics taught in the course TKJ4102 Organic chemistry, basic course, as well as standard methods and basic syntheses.

Learning outcomes

General chemistry: After completing the course students should: be able to use qualitative analysis and detect cations and anions in solutions, be able to use quantitative methods and determine the concentration of copper and chloride ions in solution, be able to measure reaction rates and calculate reaction orders for chemical reactions in solution, find the composition for complexes in aqueous solution as well as produce salt crystals and analyze the effect of experimental variables. Organic chemistry: After completing the course students should: be able to use standard unit operations such as distillation, crystallization, melting point determination and extraction, perform synthesis of organic compounds and elucidate mechanisms through reaction studies as well as understand the importance of HSE in the lab and demonstrate safe lab work in practice.

Teaching methods

For each lab a lab report must be written. The lab and the lab report are assessed with Passed / Not passed. In order to pass the course all labs and lab reports must be approved. The course is evaluated with Passed / Not passed. The laboratory course is taught every week during the semester. Already the first week of the semester there are several lectures and other activities. The students themselves are responsible for acquiring information about the start of teaching and compulsory activities in the course. This information must be acquired before the start of the semester as activities must be expected as early as Monday of the first week of the semester. All information is made available on Blackboard or NTNU's website. Only illness with a doctor's certificate or similar qualifies as legal absence. It is not possible to carry out the lab at a later date if the absence is invalid. It is given an compulsory introductory lecture for the course, as well as an compulsory preparative chemistry lecture. These two lectures are normally given in the first week of the semester. As part of the lab course in organic chemistry a compulsory (subject-specific) HSE lecture is included which will be given at the beginning of the semester. Students who do not attend this HSE lecture will not have access to the lab. In organic chemistry a lecture will be given in the laboratory before the laboratory work begins and deals with theory and practical implementation of the various experiments. These lectures are compulsory.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot take this course because the chemicals that are used in the laboratory course can pose a risk for the fetus/child. It is not possible to get an exemption from or accomodation for the laboratory experiments as they are necessary to fulfil the learning outcomes of this course. You can contact the studies administration or HSE coordinator at the Department of Chemistry, if you have any questions.

Total expected workload for the course: 225 hours.
