Organic Chemistry, Laboratory Course

The laboratory assignments shed light on the content of the course TKJ4103 Organic Chemistry basic course without lab. Practical, basic organic chemistry syntheses. Learn about (i) lab safety, (ii) handling chemicals, (iii) practical standard methods such as: extraction, crystallization, distillation, rotavapor handling, thin layer chromatography, (iv) basic organic chemistry syntheses, (v) literature reviews and (vi) reporting.

The course is a laboratory course that is taught every week (one day - 6 six hours a week, a total of ten weeks) during the semester. In addition, there will be an introductory lecture in the lab. Before the laboratory work starts, a lecture is given in the lab regarding the theory and practical implementation of the various experiments. These lectures are compulsory. For each lab assignment, an associated lab report must be written. The performed assignment lab and the associated report are evaluated with approved / not approved. In order to get the course approved, all lab assignments and the associated reports must be approved. The course is evaluated with pass / fail.

As part of the course, a compulsory (course-specific) HSE lecture is included, which will take place during the first two weeks of the semester. Students who do not attend this safety lecture will not have access to the lab assignments. The students are responsible for acquiring information about the start-up time of the course and compulsory activities associated with it. This information must be acquired before the semester starts, since compulsory activities may be scheduled as early as the first Monday of the semester, depending on how the timetable is set up. All information will be made available on the course's Canvas page or NTNU's website. If necessary, contact the department if anything is unclear.

Only illness with a doctor's certificate or similar, qualifies as approved absence. It is not possible to carry out the lab at a later date if the absence is invalid.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot take this course because the chemicals that are used in the laboratory course can pose a risk for the fetus/child. It is not possible to get an exemption from or accomodation for the laboratory experiments as they are necessary to fulfil the learning outcomes of this course. Expected work load in the course is 200-225 hours.
