Geology, Introduction

This course provides an introduction to the structure of the Earth, rocks, and minerals, and explores the geological processes that shape continents and landscapes. Students will study plate tectonics, magmatic and metamorphic processes, weathering, erosion, sedimentation, and stratigraphy, while gaining hands-on experience with observation, mapping, and interpretation in both field and lab settings.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Describe the structure of the Earth, rocks, and minerals, and explain the geological processes that shape them.
• Interpret the formation and deformation of continents and rocks in terms of plate tectonics, magmatism, and metamorphism.
• Plan, conduct, and interpret field investigations, including compass measurements and mapping of geological structures.
• Identify minerals, rocks, and fossils, and assess their geological significance in a broader context.
• Communicate geological observations and interpretations clearly and scientifically, and reflect critically on the uncertainties in geological interpretations.

Lectures, mandatory exercises, mandatory fieldwork, and two midterm tests. Field courses may take place on weekends.

The course is evaluated through anonymous feedback during and after the teaching period.
