Geology-Applied Geophysics, Basic Course

Geology: Minerals and rocks. Structure of the Earth. Endogene and exogene processes incl. deformation, metamorphism, volcanism, global plate tectonics, sediment formation and depositional environments. Petroleum geology. Geology of Norway and the continental shelf. Exercises: identification of minerals, rocks and deformation structures.
Geophysics: Collection of seismic data. Reflection seismics. Physical properties of rocks. Prosessing and analysis of seismic data. Sea bed seismics. Short introduction to other geophysical methods: Electrical and magnetic methods. Exercises.

Broad introduction to geology and geophysics including examples of application. Main geological processes and the origin/formation and properties of rocks are overviewed. Various geophysical methods, with emphasise on seismic methods are introduced.

Lectures, obligatory exercises and introductory field excursion. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
