Geology and the Environment

An introduction will be given in the geological processes with emphasis on mechanisms that form and change the land and the environment. This includes internal processes like plate movements, volcanism and earthquakes together with external processes like mass movements, the work of water and wind, weathering and sediment deposition. Further the subject will give an introduction in geological resources and what they mean (importance they have) for the humanity. Emphasis will also be given on understanding the cooperation between geology and the human environment.

The subject shall give the student an understanding of the relation between geology and the human environment.

KNOWLEDGE:
The students should have knowledge about the most important geological processes and how they influence the environment.
Further, the students should have knowledge about the most common geological recourses and how production and use are important for our welfare.

SKILLS:
The students should be able to see the relationship between geological processes and the basis of existence for humans.

GENERAL COMPETANCE:
The students should develop ability to perform basic assessments and analyses of geology and environment and to understand the role of geology in environmental issues.

Lectures and 2 days of compulsory excursions with report of own observations.
