Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry

Part 1: Basic organic chemistry: Structure, nomenclature, stereochemistry, reactive intermediates, chemical reactions, properties and production of the most important classes of organic compounds. Part 2: Basic biochemistry: proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids and membranes, enzymes, enzyme kinetics and mechanisms of catalysis, DNA-replication, repair and recombination, protein synthesis.

Part 1 (Basic organic chemistry) shall give the students basic knowledge about chemical structure and chemical reactions related to organic compounds in general and biochemical compounds in particular. Part 2 (Basic biochemistry) shall give the students an introduction to chemical and biochemical properties of the main groups of biochemical compounds and structures.

Lectures (4 hours per week), theoretical exercises and calculations (1 hour per week). 4 of 6 exercises have to be approved. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
