Perspectives on Social Work Research and Field of Knowledge

The course will examine the social work theory’s perspectives, approaches in the context of social work history and social policy. The development of social work reflects changes with respect to both target groups, organizational structure, ideology and framework. Social work is both a scientific discipline and field of practice. The course will emphasise both the theoretical and the applied understanding of how social problems occur and how they through social policy programs and empowerment might be alleviated. A main objective is to enable students to develop a critical awareness of the historical, cultural, political, academic and professional processes that have influenced the general and particular professional forms of social work and also contribute to critical reflection of social work as a field of research and knowledge.

The aim of the course is to achieve insight, a critical understanding and reflection concerning the development of the theory and practice of social work. 1) Give students knowledge of theoretical and methodological questions concerning social work and social policies. 2) Give insight into central issues that have been and still are fundamental for the development of social work (theory and practice). 3) Give students an analytic tool to understand the actual shaping of social policies based on different ethical stands. 4) Give students insight and knowledge of macro and micro theories and perspectives on social problems and socail deviation. 5) Give students knowledge on how sociological perspectives on social problems and social deviation can be used as theoretical tools on different levels in their own social work practise and research.
