Theorizing social work

The course will provide a basis for a systematic and analytical approach to fundamental perspectives and theories in social work. Based on different perspectives, students will be made aware of different ways in which social work can contribute to change and development at the individual and societal level. The course provides in-depth knowledge of social work traditions, theories and approaches set in a historical and societal context. The course also explores the relationship between theory and practice, as well as the importance of theory for professional practice and knowledge development.

Main themes in the course reflect social work as a normative subject with close ties to social policy, where developments show changes in ideology, target groups, organizational forms and framework conditions. It also highlights current research in the field both nationally and internationally. An important aim of the course is to contribute to critical thinking of social work as a field of knowledge and research area.

Central topics: the history and uniqueness of social work, including the knowledge base; relevant theoretical perspectives for social work, understanding of social work as science and practice, relationship between theory and practice, social work as a work for change; critical reflection on social work as a profession and academic discipline.

Knowledge - Students:

• Have advanced knowledge about the genesis of social work as a subject, profession and practice.
• Have advanced knowledge of the theory and conceptualizing of social work
• Have advanced knowledge about the interrelations among theory, interpretation and understanding of the dissocial and pretentions to solve social challenges
• Are able to analyse and theorize social challenges and the professional methods applied in social work and to relate this to different historical and social contexts
• Have advanced knowledge in the field of knowledge production and research relevant for social work
• Can analyse value positions and interpretations related to perspectives used in social work theory and practice

The teaching takes place on campus, and the work method alternates between lectures, group assignments, and discussions. In addition, there is self-study and oral presentations.
