Developmental Psychology and Developmental Pathology

An in-depth course in developmental psychology for students in the clinical psychology programme. Drawing on bioecological and transactional perspectives, it examines individual and contextual characteristics, the interplay between them, and how this interplay is studied over time (particularly through longitudinal designs). Thematically, the course covers key research areas such as temperament, attachment, parenting, social relationships, puberty, and identity. It also emphasises a developmental-psychopathology perspective, analysing risk and protective factors for general adjustment and for the development of mental health problems. The course includes some skills training in conversations with individuals across the lifespan and introduces psychological interventions grounded in developmental psychology.
