Applied and Clinical Developmental Psychology

The course is based on applied and clinical use of knowledge obtained through the courses Developmental Psychology 1 and 2. Training of practical skills through communication and testing of children.

Knowledge: 

• The student has knowledge about the theoretical base for, the standardization of, and the use of WISC/WAIS. 
• The student has some knowledge of how to prepare for and administering clinical interviews of children of pre-school age.

Skills: 

• The student will develop practical skills in relation to be able to implement, score and interpret tests WISC and WAIS.  
• The student can carry out a clinical interview of preschool and school age.
• The student has incipient knowledge of the qualities of caring for mentalizing, based on the insight into how attachment theory can be used as a frame for understanding the psychological work with children and young people.
• The student has incipient knowledge of how to recognize and explain the child and adolescent attachment behavior.
• The student has knowledge of principles of interventions by association-related problems in children and adolescents. 

General competence:

• The student will develop practical skills and theoretical knowledge about the tests WISC and WAIS.
• The student will develop communication skills with preschool and school children for use in clinical and applied context.
• The student will gain insight into how attachment theory can be used as a frame for understanding the psychological work with children and youth.
• The student should be able to, under professional guidance, consider connection quality in children.
• The student should be familiar with the quality of mentalizing among care persons.
• The student should know the principles of interventions by association-related problems in children and adolescents.

Lectures, seminars, demonstrations, field observation, laboratory observation. Three mandatory activities: 1. Lectures in applied psychology and lecture in interviewing children - 80% attendance. 2. Interviewing children - 100% attendance. 3. Training in WISC/WAIS - 100% attendance Assessment of the course is an essay (app. 4 pages) where the student is expected to integrate theoretical psychological knowledge with their own clinical experience.
