Psychological Disorders

This course provides an introduction to psychopathology and the most common psychological disorders, in addition to how they can be understood through different theoretical perspectives. This encompasses the features and symptoms of these common psychological disorders, including explanations regarding how different biological, psychological and social factors contribute to the formation and retention of psychological disorders. The course will also provide a brief introduction to the types of treatment approaches that are used when treating different psychological problems.

Knowledge

The student has

• basic knowledge of psychopathology and how it can be understood from different theoretical perspectives
• basic knowledge of mild, moderate, and severe mental disorders, including comorbidity, trauma reactions, suicidality, and substance use and addiction, in children, adolescents, and adults
• familiarity with various evidence-based treatment theories and models for psychological intervention

Skills

The student

• can identify the most central issues and describe the key approaches within psychopathology
• can describe the most common mental disorders and potential risk and protective factors associated with them
• masters relevant academic forms of expression within the field

General competence

The student has insight into relevant academic and ethical issues related to psychopathology.
