Introduction to Media Studies

This course provides an introduction to core perspectives in humanities-oriented media studies as well as an overview of various media formats, their communicative affordances, and rhetorical strategies. Students are also introduced to a basic media studies vocabulary and its application. The course particularly focuses on how image, text, and sound are used within different media formats, and across different genres and platforms. Academic writing and referencing skills are practiced as an integral component of the students’ work in this course.

Upon successful completion of this course students will have:

• Basic knowledge of core perspectives and concepts from media studies
• General knowledge of salient media genres and formats
• Knowledge of the use of sources and academic referencing systems in media studies

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

• Recognize and explain core perspectives and concepts from media studies
• Develop a basic vocabulary for understanding and discussing various media forms
• Apply this vocabulary to different media genres and formats
• Make appropriate use of sources and academic referencing systems

Lectures and seminars.

The compulsory assignments are issued by the course convenor at the start of term and must be completed to receive a final assessment.

Students are required to use Canvas actively for updates and information, in addition to other information resources of the course.
