Media Analysis

Through this course students develop an increased understanding of the ways in which visual media mediate both information and experience. The course offers an introduction to the ideology, rhetoric and modes of address adopted by the media, and emphasises appropriate analytic strategies for encountering various media genres and formats. Attention is particularly paid to visual culture, demonstrating how fiction, fact and everyday imagery operate in audiovisual as well as textual contexts, across different platforms. Objects for analysis, discussion and contextualisation include images, digital productions, television programmes, and filmic material.

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
- knowledge about basic and central media analytical perspectives and concepts
- an overview over the main media genres and formats
- basic understanding for- and knowledge of audio-visual narrative techniques and expression forms
- basic knowledge about the rhetorical instruments and strategies of different media

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course the students will know how to:
- apply central media analytical instruments on specific examples
- recognize and account for visual- and audio-visual instruments and basic elements
- identify and compare forms of expression, genre and formats found in different media, in regards to function and characteristic hallmarks
- apply relevant theories and methods in analysis of rhetorical strategies and ideological content in different media expressions

Lectures, group supervision and film & television screenings. The course contains mandatory activities that must be completed to take the final exam.
Students are required to keep posted on relevant messages from the department or the teacher at Blackboard.
This course may be taught in Norwegian or English, pending staff availability.
