Nationalism and democracy

The subject concerns the rise of democracy and nationalism, the formation of the nation-state and nation building processes. The perspective is international and comparative, but most attention is given til the polical, cultural and economical debates that took place in Norway from the late 19th century to the Union between Norway and Sweden was brought to an end in 1905. The Enlightenment and The French Revolution give an important background for understanding the subject.

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

The candidate
- has comprehensive knowledge about the term nationalism.
- is familiar with theoretical perspectives used to understand the topic and how historians have analyzed the Norwegian national building processes.
- has in-depth knowledge about the different phases of the Norwegian national building processes going on from 1814 until 1905.

Skills
The candidate
- is able to account for, to analyze and discuss the dilemmas and questions connected til nationalism, nation building processes, democracy and sovereignity from the late 18th century.
- has a certain written and oral practice in doing this.
- is able to aply empirical knowledge and theoretical pespectives of this period in further analyses.
