Disability and Society

It gives an overview of historical, ideological and theoretical perspectives on disability. Both policy and everyday life issues are addressed. Policy changes/reforms are discussed, together with research on changes in the everyday life of disabled people. General theory of deviance, difference and social problems will be presented. The course will also address issues of current interest.

The course is the theoretical core of the Master in Disability and Society, and is intended to provide understanding of different perspectives on disability and disabling processes, consequences for research, recent research findings and the relation to disability policy.

Seminars and written assignments/papers. Compulsory activity: writing of four assignments/papers, of which two must be approved before examination and two are part of the exam. Topic for three of them will be given, for the the last one the student will choose his/her own topic.
