Theories and Aesthetics of Film

FILM1102 is a base level course which covers the history and development of film theory. The course provides the student with conceptual tools for the discussion and analysis of film in light of various positions in film theory.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

• early theories and debates about film as art and films ability to capture reality.
• positions in film theory in different eras.
• theories relating to the social, political and cultural role of film.
• theories relating to film production, aesthetics and reception.
• traditions in film analysis.

​Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

• account for the development of different positions throughout the history of film theory, and compare them through discussion.
• place the emergence of particular positions in film theory in social, political and cultural contexts.
• conduct independent film analyses based on film theory.

Lectures, screenings and group seminars, including supervised training in film analysis. Students are required to attend at least 80% of the seminars. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English. Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.
