Film Theory and Aestehetics

The course gives an introduction to fundamental questions of film aesthetics and knowledge about the most important theories of moving pictures. Film theoretical questions and inquiries are illuminated through introductions to central schools and periods in the history of film. The main schools within both classical and modern film theory are covered, with the aim of both uncovering the particularities of film and television media, and to point out similarities in the way audio visual media relates to its audience. The course covers the development of central theoretical and analytical attitudes to the film medium in a historical context.

The course aims to provide the student with an understanding of the development of central film theoretical and film analytical positions in a historical context.

Lectures, film screenings, tutorials: including advice on writing techniques and feedback on written assignments.

Compulsory assignments:
A written assignment of 5 pages must be approved before the student is eligible for final assessment.

More on the form of assessment:
The final assessment consists of a term paper of 10-15 pages.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments on the department's bulletin board.
