Film and Storytelling

FILM1100 is a base level course which provides the student with basic knowledge of film as a medium and an art form. The course provides an introduction to film studies as an academic discipline and equips the student with basic conceptual tools for discussing and analysing films.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

• terms related to film style.
• terms related to cinematic storytelling.
• terms related to film genres and their influence.
• leading and alternative styles and narrative forms.
• how to work with film academically.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

• identify and discuss basic components of film technique.
• identify and discuss storytelling devices and techniques.
• identify and discuss key film genres.
• identify and discuss classic cinematic storytelling and alternative styles and narrative forms.
• independently use terms from the course in the analysis of film, and master an academic citation system.

Lectures, screenings and group seminars. Supervised training in academic reading and writing.
