Biodiversity and man

The course provides an in-depth study of the central themes of biological diversity and sustainable development in science education and addresses the topics both theoretically and through practical work in the field. The relevance of the themes in present society are discussed and ethical perspectives are emphasized.

Knowledge

The candidate

• have a broad knowledge of, and understanding of, the concepts of biological diversity and sustainable development
• have basic knowledge of cultural landscape forms and the management of biodiversity
• have basic knowledge of Norwegian Red List for Species, Norwegian Red List for Nature Types and the Foreign Species List Skills The student
• can identify a given sample of common Norwegian organisms and organism groups, and explain their significance, past and present, for ecosystems and man
• can apply and evaluate various methods and teaching tools for teaching about biodiversity and sustainable development
• can discuss the importance of biodiversity in sustainable development

General competence

The candidate

• can obtain, analyse and apply relevant factual knowledge in professional and ethical discussions
• can reflect on mans ability to manage biodiversity in a sustainable way

Teaching is organized in seminar weeks. The distribution of seminar weeks is stated at the start of the semester. Between the seminar weeks, one is expected to independently work on reading articles and syllabus, preparing presentations for the lectures and work with compulsory work requirements. The working methods alternate between lectures, seminars, presentations and field trips where different types of nature are studied. Academic discussions and other academic interactions are an important form of work and learning, and it is expected that all students actively contribute to such activities. One excursion (75% attendance) consists of one day in the local area of Trondheim and three days with two nights. The mandatory activities are evaluated as approved / not approved.
