About this course
Content
The course provides an introduction to practical, biologocal, technological and research aspects of fish, shellfish and algal farming, and cultivation of other aquatic organisms which are relevant for landbased aquaculture production. This includes aspects of importance for broodstock management, fry production, the growout period, farming technology, environment, as well as economy, product development and marketing. The course also provides a short introduction to the organizing structure of the industry.

Knowledge:
The candidate will know:
principles for production of different parts of the life cycle in aquatic organisms
Thorough understanding of the production chain system in aquaculture
Biological, technological, environmental, research based and international aspects of land based cultivation of fish and other aquatic organisms
Characteristics and environmental requirements for cultivated organisms
Organisation structure in the aquaculture sector
Skills:
have basic knowledge of environmental requirements in different parts of the life cycle for selected aquatic organisms
Can describe and evaluate types and design of land based aquaculture systems
Know principles for nutrition in early life stages, evaluate feed composition and growth
Understand principles for water treatment and control of water quality in landbased systems
Ability to apply required knowledge for developing holistic solutions to establish and manage land based aquaculture farms
General competence (attitudes):
The candidate is able to:
Evaluate/calculate operation parameters and routines related to different operating conditions in land based farms
Evaluate basic suitability for possible site selection
understand the role and impact of aquaculture as food producing sector
Teaching methods
Lectures: 30 hours
Laboratory course: 5 hours (1 days), mandatory
Excursion: 2 days, mandatory
