Youth culture, identity and diversity

The course addresses different aspects of youth culture, identity and diversity in a teacher and student perspective. The course integrates vocational breadth and depth and professional subjects, with emphasis on professional subjects. The professional subject contributes to knowledge about the diversity of the students' background and professional prerequisites, and helps the students develop competence related to youth development, learning and youth culture. Vocational and professional practice is closely linked to the content of the course, and secondary school practice takes place in parallel with the course. The course contributes to further development of professional and vocational identity within own field of study.

Knowledge

The student should have knowledge of

• youth development, adolescent living habits, youth culture, diversity and identity
• health promotion in a public health perspective
• the multicultural society and cultural differences
• communication and interaction, groups and group processes, conflict and conflict management
• have knowledge of legislation and regulations relating to the needs and rights of indigenous peoples and various minority groups
• have knowledge of vocational didactic methods in the course 

Skills

The student can

• apply knowledge of youth culture and guide young people with different backgrounds and assumptions
• apply knowledge of communication and interaction, groups and group processes and use different strategies for conflict management
• reflect on and consider the challenges that people from different minorities face in everyday life
• apply various vocational pedagogic and didactic methods and further develop professional and vocational identity

General competence

The student should

• be able to exchange professional arguments with others in order to promote the development of good practice in meeting people with different backgrounds and assumptions
• be able to contribute to reflection on the value of diversity in society
• have basic insight into and a critical attitude towards key ethical issues

Learning forms and activities

The course includes teaching, varius learning activities at gatherings, and digital learning activities between the sessions. There are mandatory coursework requirements in the subject that must be approved in order to be eligible to take the exam.
