Theoretical Perspectives on Adult Learning

The area of study shall form the basis for an introduction to the Master’s programme in adult learning and will examine adult learning processes based on a theoretical perspective, a participant perspective and a societal perspective. First, the content will focus on key theories, models and perspectives on how adults learn. This includes the ideological and philosophical directions that have formed the basis for the development of adult learning as a special academic field. Second, the area of study will impart knowledge on adult aptitudes and conditions for learning, which may help us describe, analyze and understand adult learning in working life and elsewhere. Attention will be given to the fact that human learning processes occur throughout life and in many arenas. Third, adult learning will be placed in a societal perspective to illuminate the societal conditions, development features and theories that are essential to lifelong learning and which determine the importance of learning for each individual, for companies and organizations and for society in general.

This area of study aims to provide students with knowledge on central theories and perspectives on studies in adult learning and to enable them to apply these to optional and compulsory tasks during the Master’s programme and in future work. It will also give insight into individual aptitudes and conditions for learning and the social factors that determine knowledge policy and the competence development of the individual.

Lectures, seminars and term paper.
Compulsory written term paper of eight to ten pages with a 12 point font and line spacing of 1.5. Students must choose a theme, but the theme must be approved by their supervisor.
