About this course

Content

An introduction to Space Technology and space-oriented activities will be presented. Mechanics in Space. Weightlessness and microgravity research. Rocket technology. Satellites. Observational satellites, environmental observations. Communication and communication systems. Man in Space. The course will run once a week in the autumn term, starting in August.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The candidate has

  • broad and multidisciplinary knowledge in space technology
  • in-depth knowledge of satellite orbits, satellite platform technology
  • good knowledge of the space environment and the effects of microgravity
  • good knowledge of space applications such as earth observation, navigation, and communication

Skills: The candidate can

  • describe the characteristics of the different orbit types (LEO, MEO, GEO, HEO)
  • describe at least three main areas of application for satellites (earth observation, navigation, and communication)
  • set up a link budget and discuss this
  • describe the main components of a satellite (payload, rocket engine, propellant, antennas, solar cells and mechanical structure)
  • describe the effects of microgravity and radiation on organic and non organic materials.

General competence: The candidate can understand suitable satellite missions, the pros and cons of operating in the space environment, and the tasks an engineer must accomplish to secure a successful launch and operation of a satellite in orbit.

Teaching methods

The course will be given every week.
