About this course

Content

The course addresses methods for numerical differentiation and integration, numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, numerical solution of sets of linear equations, numerical solution of partial differential equations, curve fitting, interpolation, statistical methods. The methods are oriented to applications and typical problems in petroleum engineering and geoscience. Emphasis is put on individual programming and use of software packages on the department or personal computers.

Learning outcomes

Review of important mathematical concepts and develop skills in numerical techniques and computer applications used for solving petroleum related technical problems.

Teaching methods

Lectures and compulsory programming exercises. The exercises count for 40% of the final grade. The course is given in English and the examination papers will be given in English only. If there is a re-sit examination, the form of assessment may be changed from written to oral examination.
