The periodic table, electronegativity and chemical bonding (metallic bonding, covalent bonding and ionic bonding). Intermolecular forces: hydrogen bonding, van der Waals bonding, dipole-dipole bonding and induced dipole-dipole bonding. Moles, concentrations and dilution. Chemical reactions, reaction equations and stoichiometry. Gases and the gas laws with main emphasis on ideal gases. Chemical equilibrium, equilibrium calculations, reaction quotient, activities and Le Chatelier's principle. Acids, bases, pH, buffer solutions, titration. Solubility, solubility product, precipitation reactions, selective precipitation and complex ion equilibria. Thermochemistry: The law of thermodynamics, enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, Gibbs free energy, criteria for spontaneity, calculation of K, van't Hoff. Electrochemistry: Description and function of galvanic cells, Nernst equation, concentration cells, thermodynamic data and equilibrium constant from electrochemical potential. Applied Electrochemistry: Corrosion and corrosion protection, passivity, Pourbaix diagram, batteries and electrolysis. Organic chemistry: Hydrocarbons, functional groups, nomenclature, isomerism. Polymers: properties and structure, polymerization (addition and condensation).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to: - Identify different chemical reactions and perform stoichiometric calculations. - Calculate concentrations and pH as well as buffer capacity using data for the relevant chemical equilibria. - Calculate reaction direction, temperature changes and equilibrium concentrations based on available thermodynamic data. - Formulate electrochemical reactions and calculate voltage and current yield based on table data for potentials, thermodynamic data and equilibrium constants, as well as combinations of these. - Explain fundamental properties of a given compound based on knowledge on electron structure, electronegativity and type of bonding. - Explain passivity, activity and aeration cell corrosion based on chemical equilibria and Pourbaix diagram. - Explain the basics of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry as well as being able to assign systematic name.
