Content
The course provides an understanding of the field of Supply Chain Management (SCM) and covers various logistics elements between companies in the Supply Chain (SC). It is important to understand the overall flow of materials and information within the SC, as well as the relationship between the logistics in the SC and the demand for products and services from the market/customers. This management-oriented course includes logistics topics at the intersection of engineering/technology, management, and economics.
The course covers fundamental theories, strategies, models, principles, and methods related to the following topics:
- The SC and logistics system
- SCM strategies
- Supply, storage, production, and distribution from a SC perspective
- Demand, customers, and markets
- Sustainability, circularity, and reverse logistics
- Design of material and information flows in the SC
- SC planning
- Information, information sharing, and technology
- Organisation within the SC
- Collaboration and collaboration models
- Performance indicators
Additionally, the course will highlight the role of the SC and logistics engineer in society, develop reflective skills to identify issues and propose solutions to create sustainable logistics systems within the SC. Emphasis is placed on theoretical concepts and real-world examples from industry.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
The course aims to provide the candidate with the following knowledge:
- Fundamental knowledge of key SCM theories, concepts, methods, and principles in the logistics system
- Basic understanding of SCM’s role within the logistics system
- Basic knowledge of the main elements of SCM
- Awareness of the history of SCM and the role of the logistics engineer in the field
- Awareness of how sustainability, digitalization, and new technology impact SCM
Skills:
The course will equip the candidate with the following skills:
- Mastery of key scientific theories, principles, models, and methods
- Ability to independently and critically select appropriate methods for analyzing and developing logistics solutions
- Ability to apply theories in practice through well-justified choices of solutions
- Capability to use acquired knowledge to develop holistic and sustainable logistics solutions
General competence:
Through the course, the candidate will achieve the following general competencies:
- Understanding of the complexity of the supply chain’s logistics system
- Ability to plan and carry out project work and collaborate in teams
- Ability to communicate logistics-related issues in the supply chain and propose solutions in a clear and structured manner, both in writing and orally
Teaching methods
Lectures, guest lectures, exercises, case and group assignments, and company visits.
