About this course

Content

Biochemistry:
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, amino acids and proteins, enzymes and enzyme kinetics, carbohydrates, lipids and membranes.
Glycolysis, citric acid cycle, electron transport and photosynthesis.
Nucleic acids, DNA replication, transcription and protein synthesis.

Microbiology:
Prokaryotes, eukaryotes and viruses.
Microbial growth and nutritional uptake.
Physical and chemical control of microorganisms.
Medical important microorganisms.
Environment and applied microbiology

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
The student has basic knowledge of the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
The student can present the structure and function of the biochemically important compounds carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.
The student has basic knowledge of metabolic processes such as glycolysis, citric acid cycle, electron transport chain and photosynthesis.
The student has basic knowledge of DNA synthesis (replication), synthesis of RNA (transcription) and protein synthesis (translation).

The student has basic knowledge of central microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and viruses) structure, reproduction and function.
The student has a basic understanding of the growth and nutrition of microorganisms, as well as microbial control.
The student has basic knowledge about the roles of microorganisms in diseases, food chains and the environment.

Skills
The student can carry out simple biochemical trials.
The student has basic skills in sterile engineering, microorganism cultivation and microscopy.
The student can communicate results from biochemical and microbiological laboratory tests in simple reports.
The student can communicate central subject matter both in writing and verbally
