Regional Geology

Overview of Europe's geological framework and development with main focus on geology of Norway. The use of stratigraphy, structural geology, igneous- and metamorphic petrology in the interpretation of geological regions. The course deals mainly with the Oslo Region, the Caledonides and Devonian gravitational collapse . Selected short themes on the geology of Norway (in the form of student projects.) Lectures in English. The course is taught for last time in 2011/2012, as course content is moved to another course.

Knowledge and skills:
The goal is to become familiar with the bedrock geology of Norway, and the type of data and synthesis involved in geological interpretations.

Understandig of:
- The different geological regions (continental rift, continental collision, orogenic collapse) through the use of geological maps and literature.

Lectures, map exercises, three required field trips. The final grade is based 60% on an oral exam, 15% on a midterm test and 25% on reports. Each of these results is registered in % points, while the final grade is registered as a letter grade. Lectures are held in English if international master students attend.
