Geology and Geological Resources of Norway

From the prerequisite course TGB4100 Geology, Introduction, students are familiar with the Earth's internal processes - the origin and transformations of minerals and rocks, and processes in the lithosphere. This course also deals with external processes, e.g. origin of glacial, glacifluvial and fluvial sediments, and properties of soils (stabilty and slides). It also includes overview of the bedrock geology of Norway, tectonics and georesources onshore and offshore. The last part on resources deals with fossil and renewable energy, CO2 storage, groundwater, minerals, aggregates, gravel, etc., the value chain from mineral deposit to mineral product, and environmental issues.

KNOWLEDGE: After having completed the course, the student:

• have obtained basic knowledge of the geological evolution of the Fennoscandian shield, including Norway and the continental shelf
• have obtained basic knowledge on the distribution of geological raw materials onshore as well as offshore
• have basic knowledge of the importance of geological processes in the distribution of geological resources

SKILLS:

• Having the ability to use geological maps, profiles, stratigraphic columns, and models to interpret geological processes and to understand the limitations of these interpretations
• Having the ability to interpret general geological processes based on observations

Lectures and compulsory exercises, and 2 one-day compulsory field labs. The compulsory field labs may be scheduled for a weekend.
