Dynamics: Kinematics. Newton's laws. Work and energy. Momentum. Torque. Moment of inertia. Angular momentum. Conservation laws. Oscillations. Resonance.

Electromagnetism: Electrostatics. Magnetism. Electromagnetic induction. DC and AC circuits.

Learning outcomes

Overall intended learning outcomes:

Through this physics course, the students shall develop an understanding of physics as a scientific discipline, various physical phenomena, and scientific methods and ways of reasoning. Furthermore, the students shall learn to describe physical phenomena by applying mathematical methods, and exploit these methods as a basis for courses that realize specific methodical learning outcomes within their own study program.

Detailed intended learning outcomes:

By successful completion of the course, the student has acquired the following knowledge:

  • Fundamental knowledge for the understanding of physical phenomena and physics as a scientific discipline.
  • Fundamental knowledge of the scientific methods of physics.
  • Fundamental knowledge on the relation between various physical phenomena and their basis for practical applications.
  • Fundamental knowledge within concepts and formulas
  • Fundamental knowledge as a technical base and a methodical understanding that subsequent courses may build upon.
  • Knowledge related to the importance of physics within engineering and within their own education.

By successful completion of the course, the student has acquired the following skills:

  • Skills in application of mathematics (vector, integration and differentiation) to describe and analyze physical properties
  • Skills in applying ICT-based tools for mathematical modeling and numerical computations in physics.
  • Skills in planning and performing experimental work
  • Skills in analysis of experimental data, and uncertainty analysis
  • Skills in writing a scientific report

General competence:

  • Dissemination of basic physical phenomena

Teaching methods

Lectures, compulsory assignments, compulsory laboratory exercises. Expected workload in the course is 225 hours.
