About this course
Content
This course covers specialized topics in modern nanoelectronics. It offers an introduction to electron transport in nanoscale semiconductor devices as well as an introduction to magnetism and spintronics. Models for nanoscale transistors and quantum effects in these will be treated. Magnetic materials and electronic application of these (GMR, TMR, memory technology, spintronics) will be discussed.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: The student has specialized insight in: - how electronic material properties change in nanoscale components. - models of miniaturized electronic components such as field effect transistors. - emerging technologies for energy efficient electronics. - magnetism in and magnetic order in solids. - micromagnetics and magnetic domains. - magnetic phenomena in nanostructures. - important spintronic device technologies. Skills: The student can: - analyze the operation of miniaturized electronic components. - choose among different theoretical approaches to describe electronic transport in devices. - combine knowledge to model electronic devices. - assess how different micromagnetic contributions affect magnetic structures. - explain the physical principles behind important spintronic device technologies. General expertise: The student can: - Build understanding of concepts where practical experience is lacking. - The candidate can communicate key subjects such as theories, issues and solutions both in writing and verbally.
Teaching methods
Lectures, tutorials. The students will write one report on a given topic and give a seminar on a self-chosen topic.
