About this course
Content
The course will give an introductory treatment of the governing laws for heat and mass transfer. The following topics are covered: Steady state and transient heat conduction, fundamentals and engineering treatment of convection heat and mass transfer, heat transfer with phase change (boiling/condensation), radiation heat transfer and heat exchangers. Both analytical and numerical solution methods are presented.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: The course provides the student with knowledge about: - Basic heat transfer mechanisms (conduction, convection and radiation). - Heat transfer by conduction in solids for steady-state and transient conditions. - Heat transfer by convection in closed conduits and on external surfaces. - Heat transfer by thermal radiation. - Convective mass transfer. - Friction and pressure loss in boundary layer flows in closed conduits and external surfaces. - Heat transfer with phase change (boiling and condensation). The course gives the student insight about: - Boundary layer flow, laminar and turbulent flows. - Heat exchangers: Working principles and basic geometries. Skills: The course should enable the student to: - Calculate heat transfer by conduction, convection and thermal radiation for practical situations. - Analyze and calculate heat transfer in complex systems involving several heat transfer mechanisms. - Calculate mass transfer by analogy to heat transfer. - Perform thermal- hydraulic calculations of heat exchangers. General competence: The course should give the student: - Basic competence related to other courses involving thermal energy systems and processes. - Skills in analyzing and calculating heat transfer in complex. problems and heat transfer equipment.
Teaching methods
Lectures, ordinary exercises, computer exercises and laboratory exercises. A minimum of 75% of the ordinary and computer exercises and minimum 50% of the laboratory exercises must be accepted. Ca 2 mid-term tests may be arranged, each being credited as 2 approved exercises, if approved. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.
