About this course

Content

Concepts and definitions; the thermodynamic system, properties, phase equilibrium of pure substances, equations of state for gases, tables of thermodynamic properties, work and heat. First law of thermodynamics; thermodynamic cycles, change of state, internal energy, enthalpy, specific heat; open systems, steady-state and transient processes. Second law of thermodynamics; reversible and irreversible processes, the Carnot cycle, the thermodynamic temperature scale, entropy, the entropy production concept. Thermodynamic power cycles, refrigeration cycles, the Otto cycle and the Diesel cycle, the gas-turbine process. Introduction to the concept of Exergy and to Exergy Analysis.

Learning outcomes

Design of energy processes requires knowledge of engineering thermodynamics. This course gives an introduction to basic concepts of engineering thermodynamics and process technology. After the course, the students will be able to choose appropriate working media and make estimate designs of the main components in thermodynamic processes.

Teaching methods

Lectures. Weekly assignments. One group assignment during the semester (a larger thermodynamic analysis/laboratory assignment).
You have to pass the semester assignment and 2/3 of the weekly assignments in order to take the final exam. A postponed written exam ("kontinuasjonseksamen") can be changed to an oral exam.
