Language and communication in theory and practice 1

TEGN2001 is based on TEGN1102 and TEGN1105. A central theme here is multilingualism and linguistic variation, both in the deaf community and in the Norwegian community, seen from both a linguistic and a "language and power" perspective. Students will be introduced to different ways that deaf/deaf blind/deafened people use their linguistic resources, both in the teaching and during practicum. Themes such as speech acts, linguistic structures and meaning creation will be discussed. Students will also work on their own linguistic resources and be made aware of how they can be used in different situations. Working with analysis of linguistic communication, discourse mapping will be used as a tool.The students will sign an professional confidentiality agreement as part of the preparation for practicum.

Candidates

• can describe how deaf, deaf blind and deafened people use and live with several langauges
• know about linguistic variation in the deaf community and can describe communicative possibilities and challenges in connection with different combinations of sensory loss
• have basic general knowledge about language and power
• have basic knowledge about genre and style in Norwegian Sign Language
• can analyse and find meaning in Norwegian discourse

Lectures, group work and discussions, exercises, observation practicum.

Compulsory assignments:

80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)

1. Short oral presentation of a discourse mapping conducted on a text in written Norwegian. 2. Written reflection on the observation practicum. 3. Read and summarize academic texts in writing, in preparation for the home exam. 4. "Nattmanøver" - an exercise to understand the challenges facing deaf blind people-this is usually conducted with the students in the third year.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Obligatory practicum: TEGN2001 contains one week of obligatory observation practicum. This usually consists in the students visiting two different places during the week, where they can observe different types of communication in Norwegian Sign Language.

Practicum is graded: Pass or Fail. (Further details on practicum only in Norwegian.)
