Language and communication 1

A central theme here is multilingualism and linguistic variation, both in the deaf community and in the larger Norwegian community. We will be working on the topic language and power, from a majority vs. minority perspective. We will also be addressing topics such as the impact of language environments on language acquisition, speech acts, linguistic structures and processes involved in creating meaning. Students will also work on their own linguistic resources in Norwegian sign language, spoken Norwegian, and written Norwegian, and be made aware of how they can be used in different situations. The course also has a focus on the ethical and sustainable use of AI.

Candidates:

• Know about linguistic variation in the deaf community
• Have detailed knowledge of language and power from a minority vs. majority perspective
• Can analyse and find meaning in Norwegian discourse

• Lectures, teamwork and discussions.
• Approved obligatory assignments are valid for three semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following two semesters). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
