Transport analytics

Transport analysis is a course for transport planners. How can we facilitate more environmentally friendly transport? Is it enough if everyone start driving electric cars or are other measures needed? In this course, you will learn about Transport Policy issues and measures.

In order to know how the population meets its transport needs today, and what effect different measures have, we need data on how people travel. In the course, we carry out analyses of travel data and gain experience in collecting such data.

Traffic registrations are another type of data that is important for transport planning, but also for traffic engineering and traffic safety. In this course, you will gain experience with the analysis of traffic data.

Travel demand can be expressed as demand for travel, and transport models are designed to calculate the demand, given land use, transport services and costs associated with different choices. You will learn calculation principles for transport demand. You will also use the Norwegian Regional Transport Model to analyze impacts of measures.

Knowledge

The candidate should have knowledge of:

• Travel behavior; about driving forces and factors affecting travel behavior, and about how to collect and utilize travel data.
• Traffic registrations, where to find data and uncertainties in the data
• Mathematical modelling of transport demand, emphasising private trips.
• Structure and operation of an established transport model.

Skills

The candidate is able to:

• Analyse the results from a travel survey
• Analyse traffic data
• Estimate the effects of infrastructural and political measures, including parking policies and tolling
• Use an established transport model to perform simple analyses
• Basic statistical analysis using Excel and R

General competence

The candidate can:

• Comprehend and present transport related topics to others
• Document systematical project work through report writing
• Handle great amounts of data
• Approach the discurse in transportation planning, both the public and the professional, with critical curiosity.
