About this course

Content

Asphalt materials and binders, asphalt mixture design, distress mechanisms, stress/strain analyses, mechanistic structural design methods, bearing capacity, strengthening/rehabilitation, tire/surface interaction, pavement management, winter maintenance.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

  • Pavement materials with main focus on asphalt
  • Asphalt binders and mix design methods
  • Structural design methods for pavements
  • Interaction between tires and pavement surface
  • Recycling of pavement materials
  • Condition survey of pavements
  • Management of pavement structures
  • Winter maintenance

Skills:

  • Evaluation of strength and deformation properties of pavement materials
  • Make a professional and sustainable choice of asphalt binder
  • Use different methods to perform asphalt mix design
  • Perform mechanistic structural design of roads to withstand traffic and climatic loads
  • Be able to plan and evaluate condition surveys, and based on this, plan rehabilitation and maintenance measures
  • Understand winter challenges and plan measures for effective winter maintenance of roads

General competence:

  • Use advanced Excel analyses for modeling of material behavior
  • Perform reasonable and sustainable material choices for different pavement layers/elements
  • Perform structural design of pavements to withstand today's and future changes of climate and traffic
  • Perform and evaluate condition measurements and plan ordinary pavement management and winter measures

Teaching methods

Lectures combined with individual and group exercises. A laboratory course is included. The lectures are in English when non-Norwegian speaking students follow the course. Exercises are given in both Norwegian and English, if needed.
