Ethnicity, Diversity and Migration

This course explores how public systems and social institutions respond to the relatively recent challenges of migration in Norway and other countries. Key topics include the integration of migrants, the provision of social services, access to social rights, and employment. The course examines how immigrants and refugees are incorporated into various sectors of receiving societies and critically engages with dominant concepts in the field, such as integration, ethnicity, and transnationalism.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: (i) expand their knowledge and understanding of perspectives, policies, and social services related to migration, integration, multiculturalism, and transnationalism (ii) strengthen their research skills in the field, enabling them to compare and critically assess different perspectives using analytical tools introduced in the course (iii) enhance their overall research competence and critical thinking abilities in exploring migration processes, ethnic relations and service provision in diverse societies.

Lectures, seminars, presentations by the participants and discussions.

The course can be taught in Norwegian or English.

The course can be canceled or changed if there are fewer than 5 registered, and/or that the department of social work does not have teaching capacity.

If necessary, some of the lectures will be organized together with students attending SARB 3518/3519.
