Global Migrations and Ethnic Relations 1

This course surveys global developments in international migrations and ethnic relations, primarily from the perspective of receiving countries. Central themes include current developments in labour and refugee migrations in different ethnically diverse societies as well as the developments in immigration and integration politics in Europe and other large receivers of migrants. The course will address and discuss central issues and concepts such as integration, immigration and integration policies, security challenges, ethnic boundaries and transnationalism.

• In-depth knowledge about immigration- and integration policies in Europe and other large receivers of migrants

Skills - The student can:

• Clarify developments in labour- and refugee migrations in different ethnically diverse societies
• Critically discuss concepts like migration, integration and exclusion
• Critically analyze challenges of security, ethnic boundaries and transnationalism both from an individual and a society perspective

General competence - The student can:

• In-depth analyses of policy aims, means and their consequences
• Critically discuss how migration and Institutional arrangements interact and construct different conditions for individuals, groups and societies
