System Engineering Principles and Practice

This course provides a foundational introduction to the principles, concepts, and methodologies of systems engineering. Its primary objective is to equip students with the analytical and methodological skills needed to enhance their research and effectively engage with complex socio-technical engineering challenges. Key topics include the systems engineering process, stakeholder analysis, definition of needs and requirements, efficiency metrics, and trade-off analysis. Students will apply systems engineering as a research methodology in both their coursework and final report.

By the end of this course, the student shall be able to

• Describe fundamental concepts and principles of systems engineering.
• Apply methods to identify stakeholders and their needs.
• Apply systems thinking skills to problem solving analysis.
• Apply systems engineering practices to enhance their research.
• Provide constructive feedback on peers’ research presentations, identifying opportunities for improvement through systems engineering principles.

Seminars, presentation assignments, writing of paper and self-study.
