About this course

Content

Module: Specialization in safety, reliability and maintenance.

Themes:

- Definition and discussion of basic concepts within reliability- and risk analysis.

- System analysis based on FMECA, reliability block diagram, fault tree and Markov Analysis.

- Calculation of reliability and availability of technical systems.

- Metrics of reliability importance.

- Analysis of safety-critical systems (IEC 61508).

- Analysis of systems that are prone to common failures.

- Statistial analysis of data.

- Overview of data sources.

- Real time update of reliability models by use of digital twins.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

The student

has basic insight into concepts and approaches to the analysis and assessment of safety and reliability of industrial equipment, as well as systems used in transport and critical infrastructure.

Skills:

The student

  • can identify and assess faults in both components and in complex systems
  • can assess which parts of a system are particularly important for preventing system failures
  • is able to use different methods to calculate the reliability of individual components and complex systems
  • can assess the advantages and disadvantages associated with the individual methods.

General competence:

The student

  • understands safety and reliability in relation to applications within operational reliability, quality, risk, environmental protection and sustainable development
  • can reflect on the relationship between costs/disadvantages and benefit associated with various safety measures.
  • understands the importance of digital twins in order to adress the safety and reliability of complex systems.

Teaching methods

The subject is carried out in two sessions, three + two days of lectures, group work and discussions. Great emphasis is placed on discussions and the transfer of experience between the participants. Between the two collections there are self-studies with reading syllabus, assignments and guidance via the internet.

The course is part of NTNU's continuing education program, and has a course fee. See NTNU Videres hjemmesider.
