Education, Culture and Media

The subject gives knowledge about conditions for pedagogical processes related to media, family, kindergarten and school as well as leisure. The subject discusses tensions between school cultures, child- and youth cultures, and media cultures. Further on, it investigates how different social groups use media and how users form media cultures and achieve media competence. As such, the subject problematizes and gives insights into media educational discussions concerning culture, ethics, bildung and literacies. From educational sociological and media educational theories points of view, reproductive processes are studied with regard to media, family, leisure, kindergarten and school. The subject investigates how national and international political directives, as well as local practices shape educational practices and media. Moreover, the subject studies the interplay and tensions between school culture, child and youth culture and media culture. Within this field of tensions, it is investigated how the actors both relate to frames of conditions and contribute to social changes. Here, social, ethnic and gender are aspects that will be considered.

The course renders knowledge about and theoretical perspectives on:
- child and youths conditions
- media bildung and literacies
- relation between formal, non-formal and informal education
- social and cultural differences in use of education
- mediated globalizing
- ethical challenges in the new media culture
- research methods in the study of children and youth

Lectures will be given 4 hours a week and seminars 2 hours a week. Lectures and seminars might be clustered together. Some of the lectures will be given in English.

The written assignment has to be approved before being able to take the exam. The assignment will be between 5-7 pages (Times New Roman 12pt., line spacing 1.5). Directives will be given in the beginning of the semester.
